Brake dust that is allowed to remain on your wheels will cause rapid deterioration. This will affect painted, chrome plated, and alloy wheels. Moss Motors has introduced a new product that I will evaluate this month.
Ceramic brake pads run quieter, cooler and don't produce the corrosive dust that standard pads do. As a matter of fact they hardly produce any dust at all. The installation should be easy and quick and should not require re-bleeding the system.
Start by putting the car on jack stands and remove the front wheels. Have a block or similar item to rest the caliper on while working on it. Remove one of the front calipers by loosening the two bolts holding it on (there could be a lock plate that will require bending a tab up in order to remove the bolt). Do not remove the hydraulic line from the caliper. The subject car is a MGB and it has two cotter pins that hold two retaining plates in place which in turn hold the brake pads. Your car should have something similar. Remove the cotter pins, the retaining plates and the brake pads. If your pads are worn you will have to push your caliper pistons back in. This can be accomplished with a pair of c clamps or tools that are available from most auto supplies. Now you are ready for reassembly and as they say it is the reverse of disassembly. Complete the replacement for the other side. The semi metallic pads that I removed were fairly new and I found the ceramic pads not to be as thick as the semi metallic type. The first time the brakes were applied I had to pump the pedal several times to remove the slack in the pistons.
There are a few things to look for. Make sure your rotors are in good condition. If they are worn or grooved they should be turned or replaced be changing pads. When finished be sure to top up your brake fluid.
I found this to be an easy change to make. The pads are very quite and stop comparably to the semi metallic type. The decreased dust should make the change worthwhile. These pads are available from Moss Motors and are made for various models of MG, Austin Healey, and Triumph.
